Even More Alumni Accomplishments!

Credites have been proving themselves to be very successful in concerto competitions this season! To name all we know of (and if you have more, or any more info on any of these events please send them to me at nicole.gnatek@gmail.com !!)

Alexander Krob won the Akron Youth Symphony Orchestra concerto competition and will appear with them as a soloist on Sunday, April 27. It will be at the E.J. Thomas Hall in Akron, Ohio...so if you are in the area, be sure to add this to your list of events. He will be performing the 1st movement of the Bruch Concerto in G minor.

In addition, Aaron Mossburg will be performing the Walton Viola Concerto with the
Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in March. If anyone has any more details on dates for this performance, please let me know so I can put them up!

Kei Niedra won the concerto competition of the Cleveland Orchestra
Youth Orchestra. If I am not mistaken, that concert will be on May 4th in Severance Hall in Cleveland...don't forget that lots of other Credites are in COYO, so I'm sure this event would be very much worthwhile.

To add to all the excitement, Chaunte Ross was a finalist in the Sphinx Competition! Click this link to see her bio!

Congratulations to all of you for such awesome accomplishments! I'm sure there are more out there, so please make sure to keep us all updated :)

-Nikki

p.s. if there is ever anyone who would like to use this as a forum to advertise things such as recitals, orchestra performances, etc...feel free! Just send me the details and I can get them up here. I know some of us don't live all that far from each other and would definitely be able to make it to some of our friend's performances, but it can be tough to keep updated about all of our own concerts, let alone everyone else's.

Ladies and Gents, we have a winner!

Matthew Lipman (Credo '05,'06,'07) placed first in the "Strings Category" of the Open Senior Division at the recent Walgreens National Concerto Competition. He was also named "Overall Winner" and will play the first movement of the Bartok Viola Concerto on February 23, 2008, at the Pick-Staiger Concert Hall on the campus of Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois) with the Midwest Young Artists Orchestra.

Congratulations and great job Matt!

'tis still the season!

Alright, so the holiday season has passed us all by. Many of the high school and college students are back in school or will be soon, the work load will soon get rather heavy and (perhaps most importantly :P) we all have Credo 2008 to look forward to!

An incredibly important thing to remember about Credo is that it would not even EXIST if it were not for the generous donations of many people. Here's the fun part. You can help raise money too! It is not nearly as difficult as it sounds and EVERY SINGLE DOLLAR COUNTS. All of them. Each and every dollar goes towards helping someone get to Credo.

Here's a post from Kavi who had the terrific idea of using this as a forum to discuss ideas for fundraising...

"Live the parable of the talents!"

At the Federated Church in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, the Rev. Hamilton Throckmorton ended his sermon with a strange request: as assistants handed out $50 bills to each parishioner, he challenged them to double the money in seven weeks. The appeal, while unusual, makes a bit more sense in light of his reading from the Gospel of Matthew. During the sermon, Rev. Throckmorton told the parable of the talents, in which a rich master gives money to his servants and tells them to do good with it. Two of the servants returned with double their money, garnering the praise of their master, but the other, too scared to take a risk, buried his share and was, consequently, banished.

In keeping with the parable, Rev. Throckmorton took $40,000 (loaned to the church by donors) and challenged the church members to use their ‘talents’ to raise more money (all of which will go to charitable causes). Suddenly, parishioners were discovering gifts that they didn’t even know they had, earning money from selling crafts, soup, plane rides, motorcycle rides, and so on. You can read more about it here.

While reading this article, I couldn’t help but think of the similarities between what this church was doing and what Credo tries to do with the ‘Share the Gift’ program. With STG, students use their gifts to not only raise tuition money for themselves but for others who are in need of financial aid. It really embodies the spirit of Credo, the idea that we all have something of value that we can use to serve others.

After perusing some of the previous STG projects, where students threw special parties, performed at their church, or even had ‘practice pledge drives,’ I started to wonder what sort of ideas people may have for this year. Is anybody planning on doing something this year? This could be a good place to kick around some ideas, or maybe even collaborate with other students coming in 2008! I’d love to hear what sort of ideas are out there.

For a slightly personal touch to this story, I would have never been able to go to Credo were it not for scholarship money. This money really does go straight to Credo students. I have done two relatively successful Share the Gift projects, but the reality is that even if you send in only 5 dollars to Credo, that would add up pretty quickly! You could even find a friend or two to send in 5 each as well!

Remember, nothing is too small, but don't be afraid to think big with these projects. Any seniors in high school? Remember that a senior recital is a great place where you will have family and friends all together-people who will know and want to help you-and perhaps you could give a short presentation about Credo, what it means to you and then pass around a basket for an "offering" of sorts. I did two silent auctions/dessert evenings and both of those were pretty successful...and not nearly as much work as they sound. If anyone wants details on those, feel free to email me at nicole.gnatek@gmail.com and I will gladly give you any info you might need!

Kavi brings up another excellent point when he mentions that this really does embody the spirit of Credo. If you don't have the money to donate yourself, perhaps you have the time. It is truly amazing to see how many people love contributing to stuff like this...they really love to see youth become actively involved in helping others and promoting the arts!

Up and Running

Hello Credo Alumni!

Welcome to the "official" Credo Alumni blog! We have had a few posts in the past year or so, but I am hoping to really get this blog going to its full potential within the next few months. The thing is, I'm going to need help doing it! How can you help??

Well, first of all...make sure you send any updates about your life to me. These can be musical, work/church related, any achievements or generalized announcements...i.e. weddings, engagements, competitions you might be involved in, professional appointments...so basically anything you would like for the Credo community to know about! Make sure to send them to me at:

nicole.gnatek@gmail.com

I will make sure to keep it as updated as I possibly can!

Also, I sent out an email a couple of weeks ago wondering if anyone would be interested in an email morning-sing. Given the positive response to this, but also paying mind to convenience and lack of clogging people's in-boxes, I think it would be best to try doing this on the blog, instead. I'm hoping to have about one a week(possibly one every two weeks as we're getting started)...and most importantly, I need people who are willing to write them! If you are interested, it should be a relatively small commitment. I'm hoping to have about 8 (or more!) people, so it would be writing one post every 2 months. Again, please email me if you would like to help with this!

One more thing! This blog does not just have to be limited to morning-sing posts and updates. If you know of any issues that might affect Credites, feel free to either email it to me, OR feel free to write up your own post and email it to me! In no way shape or form is this blog limited to just me posting on it. If you have something to say, please do! One of the awesome things about this blog is that it is open for anyone to comment on the post. At the end of each post there is an icon saying "0 Comments" (unless someone beat you to the first comment, in which case it would say "1 comment" etc) and if you click on it, you can add your own thoughts to the post. This way everyone can be involved!

Just remember...it's up to us to keep the blog going. There is nothing to small to add to it, I promise! The idea is to help Credites keep in touch throughout the year. We have hundreds of alumni, so it would be difficult to keep in close contact with all of them, but hopefully this way everyone can stay updated and informed.

Merry Christmas to everyone!

p.s. Congratulations to Rachel Howsmon! She won her youth orchestra concerto competition, so she gets to play the J.C. Bach Concerto in C Minor with her orchestra next March!
